December 2021
After a very successful summer of paddling in personal crafts with the "Get on the Water" program and a number of weeks in our dragonboats this fall, many of us took advantage of the opportunities to enjoy the water once again.
As we look ahead, the Great Lake Paddlers committee and QRPC Executive have worked hard to put together a plan to transition back into competitive dragonboat racing in the spring and summer, while maintaining and growing our memberships, by continuing the programs which include outrigger canoes, paddle boards and kayaks. The summer of 2022 looks really exciting.
Here is what we are launching for 2022.
Firstly, both the Belleville and Rouge programs will be running indoor training and pool sessions starting in January, as well our affiliate paddlers in Georgina, Sudbury, Welland and London will be doing the same. Speak to your local GLP teammates about what is going on locally for you. In addition, Zoom Fitness sessions will be offered for all to enjoy for a small fee, which will provide team circuit training, rowing or paddling erg workouts and even Sunday Yoga to help you recover from your hard training weeks. There will also be team building opportunities to take our team to the next level.
Secondly, throughout the winter there will be training challenges monthly, to test your strength and endurance and help you continue towards each of our goals and be the best athlete we can be come July. You have each received a training and competition spreadsheet from Head Coach Konrad Doerrbecker with dates and details about these challenges.
Of equal importance, our winter and spring training will be the PanAm Training Camp in Tampa April 24th to 30th. This will be an amazing opportunity to get in a boat with your teammates and experience the best coaches in the world and warm weather. Details of this camp have been sent to each of you as we have secured an exclusive boat for use of our team only. If you did "hold your darn seat" then the balance payment of $369 is due by March 30,2022. https://www.panamdragonboat.com/shop/april-24-30-2022-pan-am-spring-train-race-camp-hold-m-dmn-seat/
Finally, the Club Crew World Championships in Sarasota, July 16-23 are in our sights. We have the goal of providing team training camps in Belleville, Sudbury and possibly Pickering or Welland, depending on demand and availability. These important events will help lead us to excellence in our 3 regattas and ultimately the championships in Florida. Once again, this information is all found in your 2022 Training spreadsheet.
Keep checking in for updates and get excited to be back on the water in 2022.

The Top Gunnels where hard at work at the end of September, racing hard in Cobourg. They came away with gold and were dominant all day long! Well done Gunnels.

Two boats mixed with locals from the Greater Chicago DB Club and Great Lake Paddlers cruised the waterways of downtown Chi-Town. We paddled around tour boats well into the evening flashing glow sticks on our paddles and tunes blaring through the onboard speakers! We sang the choruses, waved to the many puzzled onlookers who decorated the vibrant shoreline. We even stopped for a pint in the heart of the downtown while confused urban professionals watched us glide to the docking area. As we headed back to the team dock some competitive juices began to flow and the two boats sprinted to the docks. we paddled for two more days and shared some deep dish pizza and a couple more beers along the way.
Ladies and Gentleman, that was a great weekend on the water with our new mates from Chicago!

Congratulations to the GLP paddlers and coach who made an impressive impact on the World Dragonboat Championships.
Our B's, Phil Lavoie, John Remillard and Doug Reed won multiple silver and bronze medals as part of the small and standard boat mixed and open crews, while up in the C's, Stefan Fridriksson had a successful showing with multiple medals too. Our head coach Konrad was busy with the TEAM USA C's, which left the championships with a staggering 11 of 12 golds!

Best wishes to the GLP family now in Thailand for the World Dragonboat Championships!
In the B's we have Phil Lavoie, John Remillard and Doug Reed and in the C's, Stefan Fridriksson and perhaps Carol Klassen in a boot cast? On the coaching side, our leader will be screaming in American at the Team USA C's. "What the hell is he saying 'Going on a Tims run, anyone need a double double and thai cruller'? I sure hope they speak Canadian?
Giv'r boys and girls, Giv'r!

The Great Lake Paddlers are heading back to the CWCC Dragonboat Championship in 2020 in beautiful Aix-Les-Bains, France!
“Despite the hundreds of miles between us and thousands of miles travelled; despite slight differences in technique and methods of training, The Great Lake Paddlers became family this weekend, over coming distance with heart and purpose." Head Coach Konrad Doerrbecker
It was an amazingly complex weekend of racing 200 metre, 500 metre and 2000m races. Insane winds hampered every race Friday making fair starts virtually impossible. A very long day Saturday featuring delayed 200 finals from Friday and then Open and Women's 500m races. These went late into the afternoon and allowed for only a limited number of 2km races against 14 boats chasing each other at 10 second intervals. The Senior B Open crew won beating the 2018 CWCC World Champs the Ottawa Dragon Boat Club by .19 seconds. Finally, Dragonboat Canada was forced to shut down all 2k races for the rest of the weekend following many delays and pending darkness.
As a result of our strong 500 (2nd) and 2000 (1st) we earned the Canadian Dragonboat Championship Overall Silver Medal in the Open B category for the 3rd year in a row.
Sunday was finally a perfect weather day and included more make up races followed by the Mixed Gender 500 metre races. All teams paddled well, but ran into every World Championship medalist team in Canada.
Overall it was “the most insanely competitive dragonboat event I have ever seen, including the world championships” KD. GLP qualified in the 7 out of 9 categories and brought home silver and bronze medals in Open B and Mixed C.
“More than that I think we brought home a sense of purpose, belonging and confidence”, for a new club which is growing and getting better. “We will have to get better. The level of competition, coaching and fitness in all categories in Canada is outstanding. Most winning times at the Canadian Nationals were faster (sometimes much faster) than times at last year world championships in Hungary. My congratulations to all qualifiers. You earned it. To the GLP family: One last time: 1-2-3 G-L-P! Training for France starts today” KD.
